The Strawberry Cake is a small, cheap embedded ARM board. Unlike the Raspberry Pi, it is real close to exist. It is a board design that challenges you to assemble it yourself, to practice your fine-pitch SMD soldering techniques. It can be assembled with a normal soldering station, or - better - reflow soldered. Ongoing miniaturisation is a FACT, if you want to do electronics without being stuck in the 80's, you need SMD!

It will not run Linux since there is not enough memory, but it will spin circles around arduino's.
It is made for the STM32 family members that come in 64pin TQFP packages, and have on-board USB, and optionally SDIO.

It features :
* a USB mini-B connector
* a single-wire debug (SWD) connector for ... debugging
* a micro-SD card slot (only SDIO mode)
* place for pin-headers
* on the topleft of the pin-headers a character LCD can be fitted
* reset button
* user button
* two LED's

Compared to an Arduino :
* it teaches you to build a DIY-professional design
* can do properly what needed dirty hacks for on Arduino
* can do dirty hacks that were out-of-reach on Arduino
* has in-circuit-debugging support (with STLink v2 for example). Arduino can do this too but for some reason nobody does.

Target cost of unassembled pcb + components is 20 EURo's.
Presenter(s): Jeroen De Dauw

Summary: What is Semantic MediaWiki, what can it do for me, and why is it not on Wikipedia yet?

What: Semantic MediaWiki (SMW) is a free, open-source extension to MediaWiki – the wiki software that powers Wikipedia – that lets you store and query data within the wiki's pages. Semantic MediaWiki is also a full-fledged framework, in conjunction with many spinoff extensions, that can turn a wiki into a powerful and flexible “collaborative database”. All data created within SMW can easily be published via the Semantic Web, allowing other systems to use this data seamlessly. This talk will explain how it works both from a user perspective and a technical one, where it might be usefull for you and how you can effectively use it. It will also cover why this is not on Wikipedia yet, and how that is going to change over the next year.

Summary: A walk through of the hack-challenge...

What: There will be a hack challenge on the second day of newline. This challenge exists out of 6 levels that range from simple networking stuff to advanced memory corruption. In this talk I will discuss the solution to all the levels. I will also take the time to congratulate the winner and award him/her the eternal status of uber hacker.

Length: 30 - 45 mins
Presenter(s): Erik

Summary: Protecting buggy programs from memory corruption attacks.

What: Dynamic taint analysis is a powerful technique to detect memory corruption
attacks. Yet with typical overheads of an order of magnitude, it is not
something you would choose to deploy in any production environment. Minemu is
a fast taint-tracking emulator for Linux which aims to be fast enough to be run
on production systems.

Minemu is a fast, process-based taint-tracking emulator for Linux (x86, 32bit).
By keeping track of where untrusted data (such as data from the network) is
copied to inside your program, and by subsequently checking whether this data
is used to take control of the program, Minemu effectively protects against
most memory corruption attacks, both for known and unknown vulnerabilities.
Tracking the flow of untrusted data during the execution of a program is slow
because we effectively have to do an extra memory operation for each original
memory operation. However, by using a special memory layout and utilizing SSE
registers, Minemu tries to keep the overhead to a minimum.
Summary: Google Summer of Code is a yearly program organized by Google to get students involved with open source projects.

What: This talk introduces you to the Google Summer of Code program, the ideas behind it, why it's awesome and similar mentoring programs organized by various organizations. As well as my views as participating student for 2 years and co-mentoring for 1 year.

What: We'll talk about our design process, and how we use code to create real objects using 3D printers, lasercutters and CNC machines. We'll also take you on a trip through the work we've created for the Generator.x 3.0 exhibition at iMAL in Brussels.

Summary: Data warehousing in a nutshell and getting your hands dirty with the Twitter API and Pentaho Data Integration

What: First I'll give a 20 minute lecture on data warehousing, some of its main concepts and more specific we'll focus on the portion where we Extract, Transform and Load the data into the data model. After that, we'll design a first Data Model designed to find the most influential twitter user in the last 5 days, based on a fixed set of keywords. after this, we'll install mysql and Pentaho Data Integration and build the PDI procedures to fill the data model.
Length: 45 mins

Presenter(s): Koenraad

Summary: A walkthrough through electronics design, step by step

What: Step by step, I'll walk through the process of designing electronics. I'll talk about what files are generated at each step, what they contain and how they fit into the design process. I'll compare commercial and open-source design tools and point out areas for improvement in both.
This talk will not be about electronics itself, but rather the process around it. To draw a parallel with software, not about how to write C, but rather about the build system. The talk will be beginner-friendly.
<pre>
0	15s	40°C
1	150s	150°C
2	90s	215°C
3	90s	265°C

Final profile
Comparing this profile to the 'ideal' solder profile, the main difference is that we do not dwell on the 'pre-heat' phase (ie. 150-200°C). This is because we could not get the temperature to rise fast enough, so we were forced to stick to a steady, slow ramp.

The results of the final profile were excellent. The main restriction of this technology is the precise application and dosing of the solder paste, and the placement of the components. We will experiment with using stencils next time. This should improve success rate significantly.
Let's decide on how we want to decide in a civil manner.
Specifically with regards to conflict resolution? Do we introduce voting? How?
The intention of this meeting is come up with a concrete and complete way to handle these things.

Koenraad: Koenraad moved page Team Internet/Wireless Anterp to Team Internet/Wireless Antwerp

Initial config
Since the installation of the Wireless Antwerp access-point on the Belgacom tower we now have line of sight to this wireless network.

To make the connection we have a NanoStation M5. This is installed in the far corner of the slightly higher part of the roof of our building. Power is supplied through POE. The POE cable must be connected to the port on the NanoStation labelled main. The NanoStation can be configured through a web-interface.

<pre>
The link to Wireless Antwerpen on the roof is now live. We have a policy
routing setup where addresses in 10.97.212.0/24 range automatically go out
via the WA link, and everything else via the regular Dommel link. You can
reach machines in the WA internal network from the regular LAN range,
however this still needs a bit of tuning.

Addresses in that new range are not yet given out by the DHCP server, but
they will be as soon as we get this set up. The idea is that we'll put
"known" MAC addresses (see Pamela) in the Dommel range, and visitors get on
the WO link. So we'll also be doing a "guest" WIFI network for this. Of
course, you can give yourself an IP address in this range (.1 is the soekris).

The dn42 link is down. The quagga on the soekris cannot handle BGP in more
than one AS, and both dn42 and WA need us to use specific ASNs. If anyone
still needs dn42, a fix will need to be found.

It's all a bit much for the soekris... we really need to replace it with
something that has 1) more CPU, and 2) more ports. We'll need a minimum of 4
ethernet ports. This will require some investment though.
</pre>

configuration
SSID:
wirelessgent-bgc5

Setup
* there is a custom init script at /etc/init.d/extra-networking
<pre>
do_start()
{
# remove this, and it won't be able to proxy-arp for the /24
ip addr add 10.97.255.169/30 dev eth2

The space
What is a hackerspace?
Hackerspaces are community-operated physical places, where people can meet and work on their projects. Check Wikipedia

Do I need to be a member to visit the space?
No, everyone is welcome, but as a non member you need to make sure that you come, while others are here.

When would be the best time for me to come over and have a look?
This would be on Thursday-evening, also check our calendar for events that might interest you.

It's also a hang-out, you don't have to work when you're in the space, we also like to call it 'an extension of your living room'.

But aren't hackers dangerous?
No, please read the jargon file about that topic. How to become a Hacker by esr also has some good explanation, what kind of people you will meet here.

Why is it called Whitespace?
We decided to name the space after the location (blekerijstraat/"bleacherstreet"), we're in an old factory which used to be a blekerij, they make things white there, the brainstorm didn't take that long. Bleach, bleak, white... space hence: "whitespace". Why we use "0x20" is left as an exercise to the reader.

Who has keys?
There's a list.

Following the hackerspace
Check the Contact page for info on our mailing list, blog, irc, twitter, ...

Membership
Decisions & Legal Stuff
How does the hackerspace work legally speaking?
We are a non-profit organisation (vzw), as founded by the statutes. However, the first rule of the hackerspace is: don't mention the statutes!

The board of the group
They exist on paper in the statutes, there is no set meeting for the board. There were no board meetings yet, we'll keep it that way.

It's a legal thing: members of the board take responsibility and this way members are protected for almost all mishaps and legal predicaments.

What gets decided and how does it work?
We don't like politics and blablabla. If you want to do something, the space is yours, just do it.

There is a weekly meeting where stuff gets discussed. The conflict model is flawed and nobody likes doing it, it leads to power struggles, and when there's a winner there's always a loser.
We've found that the best way to decide something is with unanimity. If we don't reach an agreement about a topic in 30 minutes, the discussion is closed. The people from both 'camps' are encouraged to chill out, have a drink together and figure something out by the next meeting.

Activities
So what do you guys do there anyway?
That depends on the current group, as there are no rules in a hackerspace, so everybody is free to work or do whatever he likes. The space is infrastructure that exists to bring like-minded people together. If you want to build something cool, but need help or find somebody to explore an undiscovered land with, this is the place to go.

We are doing workshops, hackathons and similar events, but nobody is forced to take part in any of these. You kind of get the idea, everybody is free to do what he wants, as long as she treats everybody and the space with respect.

Can I do $THING?
Yes, unless it will kill little puppies. To be clear, don't break the law, don't break things you don't own and don't endanger people or the space itself, for the rest, do what you feel like!

Will you help me with $THING?
Srsly if you have a cool project idea, try to find people interested in joining the project, but don't expect everybody to just jump on it. Everybody has only so much time to spent on cool stuff and people might be busy with other things already. So come over with cool ideas, share your knowledge with others and have a great time.

Is this like a startup incubator?
No, a hackerspace and esp. ours is and should be a non-profit organization. The idea is to explore things that you might be interested in, which can be anything from programming, robotics, hardware hacking, software, soldering etc., but we are not a company creating products.

Since you are free to build whatever you like in the space, you can of course build something and sell it, we do not hinder you. Use your time and energy for the things you care about, but please do not put the name of the hackerspace on your thing.

Can I give a workshop/talk?
Of course! That's one of the reasons we started this thing, so please do so! Even if you are not a member, come to us and tell us what you want to present/show/explore/teach, we will set something up.

Random
Why is this all in English?
The very first people starting the space are all members of the Brussels Hackerspace, where English is the general language of choice, since everybody has to make a little bit of an effort ot speak it and we exclude nobody. Brussels is obviously quite international and having everything in English attracts people that are interesting, but might not speak any of the official Belgian languages. This tradition is kept alive here, but don't be scared by that, almost all people speak something like Dutch in the space :-)

Do you have club-mate?
Of course!

I don't live in Gent, are there other spaces in Belgium?
Yes, check over here.

Workaround
The switch near the door should work normally, the only thing currently is that the roof in the front uses power from a plug. If the roof is not working, make sure that the roof gets power (see near the electricity box, there should be a hacky cable going from a screw terminal towards a plug downstairs - via a powerblock). Either it's not plugged in or the power block is switched off. Turn it on and use the switch near the door.

Please come over, even if you don't know anything about electricity. An extra pair of hands is always welcome!
* Make documentation and label everything
